Crime writer Agatha Christie's latest novel, The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding and a Selection of Entrées, is published, with much of the book having been conceived at Abney Hall which had previously been owned by Agatha Christie's brother-in-law and where she had spent much time in her youth

The Beeching cuts result in passenger train services ending in Cheadle after nearly 100 years. This means Cheadle becomes one of the largest popuated areas in Britain without any direct connection to the national rail network

The Cheadle Civic Society is formed to encouage high standards of architecture and town planning and improve the general public amenity. At the first meeting, more than one hundred people gathered in the Institute on Cheadle Green to witness the formation of the Society with the first chairman being the popular GP, Dr. R. O. Payne

An announcement is made that Cheadle North goods station is to close

The Ockleston Memorial is moved to nearby Queens Gardens to help improve traffic flow in the area

A council idea to build a new relief road around Cheadle and make the High Street pedestrians-only is met with considerable opposition from local residents and businesses and the idea is rejected

In a major modernisation programme, many old houses in Charles Street, Andrew Street and some in Hall Street behind St. Mary's church are purchased by the council as part of a compulsory purchase order

The National School, opposite the "new" Post Office, is demolished and the site is subsequently developed into a supermarket on the ground floor, with the two upper floors remaining in the control of St. Mary's church and are officially named, The Upper Rooms. They are to be used for a variety of church functions, meetings and educational and social purposes.

Downs Bridge, opposite Broadway on Wilmslow Road, is reconstructed

Patsy Calton wins the General Election for the Liberal Democrats with a majority of just 33 votes out of 43,606 cast

The grounds around Abney Hall are declared a Local Nature Reserve

Patsy Calton is re-elected to Parliament at the General Election but dies of cancer four weeks later. In the ensuing by-election, fellow Liberal Democrat Mark Hunter becomes the new MP

Plans are put forward to redevelop the site around Barnes Hospital which will include new offices and exclusive town houses
